If the weather is not the best and rain spoils plans for an outdoor excursion, fear not! Folgaria and its surroundings offer various activities to do even in bad weather.
In today's blog post, I will give you my tips for a pleasant day of history, culture, wine tasting and relaxation. Take your umbrella, kway, comfortable shoes, and let's go!
BASE TUONO For history buffs, a visit to Base Tuono in Passo Coe is a great choice.
This open-air museum tells the story of the Cold War and the era of Nike-Hercules missiles that defended Western Europe. Although some parts of the exhibition are outdoors, most of the visit takes place indoors. The tour is well structured, with information panels and explanatory videos to help understand the historical context.
FORT BELVEDERE One of the most important Austro-Hungarian forts in Trentino, Fort Belvedere offers a journey into the past through its galleries, artillery emplacements and exhibitions on the Great War.
Its power was known by all at the time, so much so that it boasted the motto ‘per Trento basto io’ (I am enough for Trento), signifying that it alone would have succeeded in preventing the conquest of Trento and the Tyrol.
It is a place that conveys intense emotions, even on rainy days, when the atmosphere becomes even more atmospheric. Moreover, the view is spectacular even with cloudy skies!
WATER PATH If the weather is mild and it doesn't rain too much, the Sentiero dell'Acqua (Water Trail) in Carbonare is a picturesque walk that follows the course of the Astico torrent. Here you can admire the characteristic Cueli Mill, a testimony to ancient trades.
It is an easy route suitable for everyone, perfect for those who want to enjoy nature even with a few drops of rain. The sound of flowing water makes the experience even more relaxing.
HONEY MUSEUM A tasty and educational experience: the Lavarone Honey Museum allows visitors to discover the world of bees and honey production.
Here you can see at first hand the work of beekeepers, discover the different types of honey and, of course, taste and purchase local products. It is an excellent opportunity to take home a sweet souvenir of your holiday!
CASTEL BESENO One of the largest and most evocative castles in Trentino, Castel Beseno, about 15 km from Folgaria, dominates the Adige Valley with its imposing walls, and is a perfect choice in case of rain.
Inside there are interactive exhibitions and historical reconstructions, ideal for families and medieval history enthusiasts. Although some areas are outdoors, much of the visit takes place inside the halls and towers, where one can imagine life in the castle in medieval times.
HAUS VON PRUKK HOUSE For those curious to discover ancient local traditions, the Casa Cimbra Museum in Luserna offers a glimpse into the daily life of the past.
During the visit you can see everyday objects, work tools and listen to stories about the Cimbrian culture. It is a small museum, but very interesting, especially for those who love the history and traditions of ancient peoples.
VISIT TO A BREWERY Lovers of craft beer cannot miss a visit to the Barbaforte brewery in Folgaria. Here you can visit the brewery and discover the secrets of their preparation. The brewery also organises guided tours (ask the APT for information or contact them directly before arriving), an excellent opportunity to spend a few hours indoors, perhaps sipping a good dark or amber beer.
TRENTO AND ROVERETO If you feel like moving around a bit by car, the Muse in Trento is a perfect option for a rainy day. You could stay inside all day!
The museum offers scientific exhibitions, interactive experiments and spaces dedicated to nature and technology. It is perfect for families with children, but also for adults who want to discover something new.
Alternatively, you can visit Rovereto, with its MART (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art), for an immersion in art and culture.
The historic centre of Rovereto is also worth a walk, with its arcades, shops and historic cafés.
SHOPPING IN VIA ROMA Don't miss a stroll among the shops and boutiques of Via Roma in Folgaria (there are few places in Trentino that can boast such a long pedestrian street), ideal for a little shopping.
Here you will find shops selling local handicrafts, sportswear, typical Trentino products and souvenirs perfect for taking home a memento of your holiday.
Stopping at a pastry shop for a slice of strudel or a hot chocolate is without doubt a must! Also in the centre of Folgaria, don't miss a visit to the parish church of San Lorenzo.
DAY SPA On a grey and rainy day, why not treat yourself to a few hours of relaxation in a spa? The Essenza Alpina campsite in Folgaria offers a wellness area with sauna, Turkish bath and aromatic dance. Immersing yourself in the warm steam of the sauna or relaxing while admiring the mountains, while it is raining outside, is truly regenerating.
As you can see, there are various things to do with the rain in Folgaria!
From discovering local history and traditions, to tasting honey and craft beer, to relaxing in a spa, the possibilities are many. I hope that these tips of mine will be useful for you to enjoy your holiday in one of the most beautiful places in Trentino!
