Stone Sentinels – History, memory, and landscape on the Alpe Cimbra
Between the end of August and the month of October, the Alpe Cimbra will host “Stone Sentinels,” a festival dedicated to enhancing the seven great fortresses of World War I and the extraordinary historical and cultural heritage of the area. A project that connects history, memory, landscape, and culture, transforming the forts of the Alpe Cimbra into living places, capable of narrating the past through contemporary languages and new opportunities for encounter.
Forte Belvedere-Gschwent, Forte Sommo Alto, Forte Cherle, Forte Dosso delle Somme, Forte Luserna-Werk Lusérn, Forte Busa Verle, and Forte Vezzena still represent some of the most imposing testimonies of the fortified system built in the early twentieth century. True stone sentinels, immersed in a landscape of extraordinary beauty, safeguard the traces of a fundamental chapter in European history.
The festival offers a calendar of events capable of guiding residents and visitors to discover these places through performances, music, meetings, narratives, excursions, and cultural experiences, creating a deep bond between the historical heritage and the identity of the Alpe Cimbra. Stone Sentinels aims to be not only an opportunity to learn about the history of World War I but also an invitation to reflect on the value of memory and peace, rediscovering a territory where nature and history coexist uniquely.
From the end of August to September, the fortresses of the Alpe Cimbra thus become protagonists once more: no longer places of war, but spaces of culture, knowledge, and encounter, capable of conveying to new generations the memory of the past and the value of a heritage that belongs to the entire community.
The initiative is promoted by the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in collaboration with the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino and the Santa Chiara Cultural Services Center.
