Sentinels of Stone – History, memory, and landscape on the Alpe Cimbra

Between the end of August and October, “Sentinels of Stone” returns to the Alpe Cimbra, an event dedicated to enhancing the seven great fortresses of the First World War and the extraordinary historical and cultural heritage of the territory. A project that brings together history, memory, landscape, and culture, transforming the forts of the Alpe Cimbra into vibrant places capable of telling the past through contemporary languages and new opportunities for meetings.

Fort Belvedere-Gschwent, Fort Sommo Alto, Fort Cherle, Fort Dosso delle Somme, Fort Luserna-Werk Lusérn, Fort Busa Verle, and Fort Vezzena still represent some of the most imposing testimonies of the fortified system built at the beginning of the twentieth century. True sentinels of stone, immersed in a landscape of extraordinary beauty, they preserve traces of a fundamental chapter in European history.

The event offers a calendar of appointments capable of guiding residents and guests to discover these places through performances, music, meetings, narratives, excursions, and cultural experiences, creating a deep link between the historical heritage and the identity of the Alpe Cimbra. Sentinels of Stone aims to be not only an opportunity to learn about the history of the First World War but also an invitation to reflect on the value of memory and peace, rediscovering a territory where nature and history coexist uniquely.

From the end of August to September, the fortresses of the Alpe Cimbra thus become protagonists again: no longer places of war, but spaces of culture, knowledge, and encounter, capable of transmitting to new generations the memory of the past and the value of a heritage that belongs to the entire community.

The initiative is promoted by the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in collaboration with the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino and the Santa Chiara Cultural Services Center
